Arts and crafts of the world

Learners will learn about: different styles of art from various cultures around the world, craft production methods and styles used around the world. Learn about the cultures from which the art comes, learn to make crafts items in teams improvising and engage in designing products influenced by different cultures. There will be opportunities for improving communication through some discussion. The course outcomes or goals are to produce a range of two/three products in sufficient numbers to hold a table top sale to raise an income from the sale and for learners to value their creative skills by producing high quality finished products. The participants will gain employment skills, also learn to work as a design and production team. Understand how to budget a project and price the individual units produced.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
An interest in art and have chosen the course yourself. Good communication skills, the ability to concentrate throughout the class.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
To learn about different craft block printing techniques and produce a series of decorated hand writing papers, To research & study a range of weaviing techniques for a craft item styles from Venetian, Mexican, Chinese, North American and Indian. Research Indian textile decorative techniques and then dye and print cloth to create bag cushion or book cover. To create a portfolio of evidence of learning and achievement on the course.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Please wear loose clothing and bring a bottle of water and an A4 folder

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Learners will be expected to purchase an A4 folder to contain handouts. Wear clothes which you do not mind getting messy and enable you to roll up your sleeves.

Options when finished
There are a variety of different courses available in the supported learning department or mainstream classes if appropriate. Information about these courses is available in the prospectus and through your tutor and curriculum leader.
