Photography digital skills - plan, explore and build a portfolio of images

Stepping forward into industry, self-employment or further education, this course will provide you with the opportunity to build a professional digital portfolio of work containing a selection of quality images including a book of notes and ideas ready for client viewing. NOTE: This course is divided into 2 x 2 hour sessions with a 1-hour lunch break on Thursdays over five weeks.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
A passion for photography is essential. For learners choosing photography as a potential career. A basic level English, Maths and computer skills would be useful. Learners refreshing their photography skills will be supported ensuring they can evolve creatively, work on personal projects and take part in any planned activities.

Learning Goals:
To build and develop your skills in digital photography To complete an independent project To experiment and expand your portfolio of work Identify and achieve a personal goal as discussed with your tutor.

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course, including demonstration (both group and individual), one to one tuition, group work, progress assessments, observation, discussion and question and answer sessions.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use various methods to assess your progress during the course. These may include observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions, and photos of projects to record your achievements in our virtual learning environment (VLE).

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Learners may wish to work on their projects outside class time in order to progress. Homework exercises are set to enhance and develop techniques learnt in the class. You will be need to spend at least 2 hours per week completing homework tasks. You will be expected to take full advantage of our virtual learning environment and log in at least 24 hours before the course begins to prepare in advance for the day https://all.lewisham.gov.uk/ (VLE). Signing into our course moodle site will enable you to access information about the centres, enrolment dates, take part in course forums, messaging and other various online activities. Please provide digital photographs of your work by sending them to the tutor throughout the course.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
A hand held digital camera with manual controls is essential however the course can be achieved if you have a good phone camera. You will need access to the internet and a working computer with camera to take part fully in the activities planned for this course. Any additional materials or equipment required will be discussed in the first lesson. You may need to purchase items for your personal goal depending on what you choose to do.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please bring your own lunch or make arrangements to go out and purchase something locally during the break. Your own hand held digital camera with manual controls at the ready. Working ideas notebook and images for inspiration. Your completed initial assessment will have been requested via email before the first session, please make sure this has been completed as part of the Individual Learning Plan process. Don't forget to wear suitable clothing - enclosed shoes, comfortable casual clothing.

Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of design, media, music and food courses at different levels. Information about these courses is available through the tutor, the curriculum leader or the ALL programme.
