World AIDS Day 2022

World AIDS Day takes place on 1 December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related illness.

Get tested

Lewisham has a higher rate of HIV infection than London and England and it has been estimated that one in five people in the city with HIV do not know that they have it. Getting tested is the only way to find out you have HIV. It is quick, easy and painless. If you are living with HIV, earlier diagnosis and treatment means you can live a full, healthy and productive life.

You can order a free and confidential HIV test if you think you may have been exposed to HIV or if you are in an at-risk group. You can also get an HIV test at your GP surgery or sexual health clinic.

Prevention

There are many effective ways to prevent or reduce the risk of HIV infection. A condom is the most effective form of protection against HIV and other STIs. In Lewisham, free condoms are available in various locations including sexual health clinics, pharmacies and youth centres. Visit the Come Correct website to find your closest outlet, discover what services they offer and when they are open.

You can also visit the NHS website to find out more about ways to reduce your risk.

Marking World AIDS Day in Lewisham

We will illuminate the Civic Suite in red on Thursday 1 December in support of World AIDS Day. The Red Ribbon Living Well CIC will also host a free event for members of the public on Friday 2 December where you can hear personal stories from people affected by HIV and AIDS and receive a free HIV test.
