Tackling tenancy fraud and illegal subletting
In one case, the Tenancy Audit team was approached by a sub-tenant because their landlord (our tenant) evicted them from the property. When somebody with a council house rents it out without permission or obtains a home through providing false information, they are guilty of housing fraud.
The sub-tenant in this case became aware of the property through friends and believed it was a private property for rent. Following a dispute, they were told to leave the property without notice.
They contacted our team, and we were able to assist the tenant collect their belongings and we began proceedings to take possession of the property.
To tackle tenancy fraud, we rely on information from staff and other sources. But our experience shows that residents are best placed to know what is taking place on the estates they live on. We value and welcome all referrals.
If you suspect someone is committing housing fraud, let us know. All reports will be kept confidential and you can remain anonymous.
