Lewisham's stars of 2022 celebrate A-level and vocational results

At the end of another challenging year, teenagers in Lewisham are celebrating results that will see them head off to top universities, prestigious apprenticeships and vocational training.

It is the first time since 2019 that A-level grades have been based on public exams, after two years of cancellations due to the Covid pandemic.

Left to right: Cllr Brenda Dacres, Deputy Mayor of Lewisham, students of Prendergast Sixth Form, Cllr Chris Barnham and Vicky Foxcroft MP. There have been individual success stories across schools and colleges in the borough.

Sydenham and Forest Hill sixth form (SFH6) student Anna, 18, achieved A*A*A and will be heading off to Cambridge to study History.

Anna said:

“I’m so excited to be going to Cambridge to study History. It’s not what I was expecting at all! My advice to anyone about to start A levels would be to revise regularly, be consistent - do your revision little and often, rather than in huge chunks and cramming it all in at the end.”

Also at SFH6, Safaa studied BTec Health and Social Care and achieved Distinction*, Distinction*, Distinction.

Safaa said:

“This is amazing! When I spoke to the teachers at SFH6 they suggested BTECs would be a much better option for me as I knew already I wanted to become a midwife. Lots of people think BTECs are not as good as A levels but I have got into my first choice university, and will be a qualified midwife in a few years and ready to start my career!”

Students at Prendergast Sixth Form have also been celebrating their success. There were some outstanding individual performances including Philip and Kiera who achieved A*A*A* grades and Nyeleti, Ayeley, Mateo, Roseanna, Lyra and Sophia who were awarded A*A*A.

Councillor Chris Barnham, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People and Community Safety, joined Deputy Mayor Brenda Dacres, and Vicky Foxcroft, MP for Lewisham West and Penge, at Prendergast Sixth Form to celebrate with students as they received their results.

Cllr Barnham said:

“I’ve seen first-hand how hard our young people have worked during the challenging times of the past few years. We are extremely proud of all our young people, and pleased for their achievements. We’re grateful too, for the dedication and support offered by teachers, parents and support staff."

Head of Prendergast Sixth Form, Simon Conway said:

“We are extremely proud of all of our students. They have performed superbly and are benefitting from the huge amount of hard work they have put into their studies over the last two years. We are delighted that they have gained places at some of the most prestigious Universities in the country and we look forward to watching them develop further into the leaders of the future.”

There are lots of ways for students to get support and advice if needed over the next few weeks. Students should initially speak to their schools or colleges, or attend the post results event for initial advice on Thursday 25 August.
