Lewisham hits 100 electric vehicle charging points

As part of its commitment to tackling the climate emergency and promoting sustainable travel, Lewisham Council announced today that the borough has now reached an important milestone of 100 charging points for electric vehicles.

The use of electric vehicles (EVs) is on the increase, especially in the business sector, and the Mayor of London predicts the volume of EVs on London’s roads will double by 2023. The introduction of the ULEZ in London next year will only see further increases in their use. The Council is committed to promoting non-polluting methods of travel, with a strong focus on increasing walking and cycling. However, it also recognises the need for a vehicle option for some essential journeys, and is committed to making the transition from petrol and diesel to EVs as smooth as possible for residents and businesses.

Councillor Sophie McGeevor, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:

“Our expanding network of EV charging points is part of our wider strategy to tackle the climate emergency and make Lewisham a cleaner, healthier borough. Our aim is to have a charging point within 500 metres of every household. The strategy also includes other transport measures such as Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and School Streets, and broader initiatives such as low carbon heating for buildings.

“This week is London Climate Action Week, when Londoners are asked to reflect on how we can help to create a healthier, more sustainable capital city. An important area to consider is how we travel.

“The charging points, which can be found easily by visiting www.lewisham.gov.uk/evchargingpoints, will make the switch to environmentally-friendly forms of motorised transport much easier for people who still need a vehicle for essential journeys – and of course from 2030 there will no longer be any new petrol and diesel cars.

“We are proud of the changes we are making to promote sustainable travel, and will continue to listen to the comments and questions raised by residents as we go through this essential process.”

The Council intends to further extend the network of EV charging points in advance of the introduction of the ULEZ. It welcomes any suggestions where points could be installed, and residents are urged to email traffic@lewisham.gov.uk with their thoughts.
