Learning about the 'Three R's' at Edmund Waller School
Each hour-long workshop included interactive learning and fun games centred on plastic pollution and the ‘Three R’s’: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
This was part of a pilot outreach programme run by the Council’s Strategic Waste and Environment team, and is available for free to all primary schools in the borough.
Pupils enjoyed games and a presentation to help them understand the effects of plastic pollution on marine wildlife, both locally and globally. They discussed decomposition rates, food chains, habitats and how we can have a positive impact on the environment on a global scale.
Pupils were keen to share their thoughts:
“I found the workshop very interesting. It’s hard to know what you can or can’t recycle and this helped me to understand”
Another pupil said:
“I learned that even though plastic can be useful, it is damaging a lot of our wildlife in the seas and we need to do things to stop it happening”
The pupils were joined by Cllr Sophie McGeevor, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, who said:
‘It’s encouraging to see young people so engaged with the issues affecting our environment. This is a great initiative to be able to offer our schools, so that children can learn about recycling on a local level and then to bring that information back into their home to share with their families.’
The workshops are currently available to Year 3 & Year 4 pupils in all Lewisham primaries.
