Inside Out comes to Catford

Inside Out, the international art project by globally renowned artist JR, came to Catford Broadway from Thursday 17 June and portraits of local people were pasted on the side of Lewisham Town Hall this weekend.

A cyclist cycles past a lorry that looks like a large digitial camera. Inside Out's portraits are displayed on a building in the background.

The black and white photograph gallery is part of the capital’s cultural celebration of UEFA EURO 2020 led by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. Five locations across the city are being pasted in photographs of Londoners in celebration of the capital’s communities, football and its ability to bring people together.

In Catford, the project is celebrating diversity and local culture in the lead up to Lewisham’s year as the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture.

The programme in 2022 will shine a light on Lewisham’s neighbourhoods, communities and stories to amplify voices and inspire positive change.

Councillor Andre Bourne, Cabinet Member for Culture, Jobs and Skills, said:

“This project is a great build up to our year as Borough of Culture. It offers an opportunity for residents to come forward and be part of a montage of faces, covering all races and gender.
‘This initiative is an amazing way to start the build up to our comprehensive programme of activities during our year as Borough of Culture.”

Inside Out is an international art project created by renowned French artist JR that has taken place in 138 countries with over 415,000 people.
