Catford Food Market makes its return on Catford Broadway
The market has been showcasing the local talents of food traders and artisans since 2017 and has, to date, clocked up over 150 hours of trading, connecting people from Catford and beyond with international street food and live music.
Half of the traders live in Catford, making for a carbon friendly initiative as there are fewer and shorter journeys transporting goods in and out of the market area.
On Sunday 27 June from 10am - 4pm, street food stalwarts including Raastawala, Zongo Foods and Red Tent Ethiopian Food will be joined by newbies, many of which launched during the pandemic, including the Refugee Cafe who will be selling preserves and baked goods to fund the launch of the cafe to support refugees in the borough.
The market coincides with the completion of the Inside Out project - the capital’s cultural celebration of football and its ability to bring people together. Portrai
ts of locals will adorn the Old Town Hall on Catford Broadway in the project created by award-winning artist JR, whose photographic portraits have encouraged discovery, revelations and sharing of untold stories of people around the world through collaborative action and impact. Over the past decade, more than 400,000 people across 138 countries have taken part in Inside Out which has inspired collaborations and conversations about a range of topics including diversity, feminism, racism, climate change and art.
House of Catford will also be at the market, Catford’s very own gift shop which donates all profits to charities – The Sickle Cell Society who supports people affected by Sickle Cell disorder and The 999 Club a homeless charity that supports all people across the borough and the Catford Community Fridge.
Councillor Powell, Cabinet member for Culture, Jobs and Skills (job share) said:
“Catford residents and local traders will welcome the return of the popular Catford Food Market as it brings more people to the town centre and encourages people to shop local, supporting Catford’s economy.
“As the vision for Catford takes shape through the Framework Plan, community events such as the Catford Food Market and the Inside Out art project demonstrate that regeneration is more than just physical change. Catford’s community has contributed to the success of the market with involvement from a range of local traders and four years of hard work means the town centre now boasts one of the most sought after street food markets in South London.”
Local bakers, Slate & Crumb, who will be making their market debut said:
“We’re really excited to be joining that market. What we like most, apart from living just around the corner from it, is its diversity - it represents Catford and that’s important. It's also good that the market equipment is set up for traders so you just turn up and trade which saves a lot of time, hassle and money. It’s also very well promoted and the branding is great.”
