Alex Yee celebrated for Olympic success

Alex Yee, who won a Gold and Silver medal for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics in July, has been named as the first-ever recipient of the Mayor of Lewisham’s Recognition Award.

The Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan, presented Alex with the award at a meeting of Full Council last week, in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements.

Alex, who was born and raised in Lewisham, won Gold in the Mixed relay triathlon and Silver in the Men’s individual triathlon, at his first Olympic Games this summer.

Alex began his triathlon career with Crystal Palace Triathletes and he then began running competitively at the Ladywell Arena and was awarded bursaries from Lewisham Council to support him with travel expenses for meets and competitions. As a youngster, he represented Lewisham at the London Youth Games and in the Mini London Marathon, winning in the under-15 category in 2013. He was awarded the Mayor’s Special Achievement Award at the Lewisham Sport Awards in 2012.

Alex attended Stillness Junior School in Brockley and was honoured with a special mural near Brockley station earlier this year, designed by local artist Lionel Stanhope.

The Mayor of Lewisham’s Recognition Award is a new award that is given to inspiring individuals from Lewisham who have done the borough exceptionally proud and inspired others to aim high.

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, said: “Alex Yee is an inspiration to Lewisham and I hope his journey from Lewisham to the Olympic Games will inspire other young athletes across the borough. From training at Ladywell Arena to crossing the finish line at the Tokyo 2022 Olympics, he has grown and achieved so much at such a young age.

“On behalf of Lewisham I want to congratulate Alex on his amazing achievements. I am delighted that we are able to recognise him with this award and can’t wait to see what he does next.”

Alex Yee said: “I’m extremely proud to be from Lewisham and to be a Brockley boy. Lewisham is a young borough and home to lots of talented young people, and I hope that my achievements have inspired other Lewisham residents of all ages.”
