London City Airport's appeal to the Planning Inspectorate
Earlier this year, the Council responded to the consultation on the proposed expansion of London City Airport’s operating hours, setting out our opposition to this move.
As I made clear in my letter to London City Airport’s Chief Executive Officer in March, we do not see any justification for extending the current operating hours to allow additional flights to take place during the morning and on Saturdays.
The proposed changes would increase noise pollution for Lewisham residents and undermine efforts to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and tackle the Climate Emergency.
In July, Newham Council’s Strategic Development Committee rejected London City Airport’s proposals – a move that we welcomed here in Lewisham.
London City Airport have now submitted an appeal against Newham’s decision to refuse permission and a public inquiry will be held later this year by the Planning Inspectorate for England.
We will be submitting a formal representation as a Council to the public inquiry, but I am also urging Lewisham residents opposed to the airport’s proposals to do the same.
You can submit your views to the Planning Inspectorate by Thursday 28 September 2023 using appeal reference APP/G5750/W/23/3326646.
