Meet the Apprentice 2022: An interview with Early Help apprentice, Harvey Klee-Chapman

It's National Apprenticeship Week. So we caught up with Harvey Klee-Chapman, 27, in the Early Help and Prevention team to find out about his experiences of the Council's apprenticeship programme.

A smiling, young man with beard, wearing white shirt standing in front of a white wallWhy did you apply for an apprenticeship at Lewisham Council?

I’d lived in Lewisham for a few years and had worked in a local SEN school where I was part of a great, supportive team. I wanted to build on the skills and experience I’d gained at the school and really wanted a role where I could give back to the community. After searching online, an apprenticeship at the Council seemed like a good fit for me. I liked the idea of learning on the job and the fact that it gives me lots of options for whatever I decide to do next.

What was the application process like?

Very straightforward. I had to answer some questions and then write a report so I knew from the get-go that it wouldn’t be a role where I could rest on my laurels but in my opinion that’s a good thing. I was interviewed virtually which was a new one for me, as Covid restrictions were in place at the time, but everyone on the panel was really nice and I got the job so I’m very happy with the way it went.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I'm a Trainee Family Practitioner and no two days are the same. I meet different people every day. But the most rewarding part of my job is being able to empower families. Providing them with the emotional and practical support they need to make the right decisions for their children. Sometimes it’s about the little things too. The other day one of my service users lost the key fob for his flat which made it hard to get in and out of the building. I was able to track down another fob for him and that made his day. So it made mine too.

What has it been like to work during the pandemic?

I started in this role during the pandemic so I’ve never known it to be any different. What I can say is that my team are friendly and supportive. If I need any help, there is always someone on hand with advice. What’s really nice is that there are three other apprentices within the team. It’s reassuring that we’re all on this journey together so can share experiences.

What have you achieved so far in your role? Any future plans?

I’m already managing my own case work, with support from my line manager. I’m proud of that as it’s another step towards me working independently. However I’d probably say my biggest achievements so far are the positive outcomes for families. That’s what makes this such a great job. I don’t have any plans to leave Lewisham Council for the foreseeable. I’d like to continue working here and see where it takes me.

What advice would you give to other residents who are thinking about doing an apprenticeship at the Council?

I’d say “Go for it.” You’ll find a happy supportive environment and there are a wide range of roles available. Just do your research and you’re bound to find something that works for you.
