If you are feeling low, anxious, overwhelmed, or struggling to cope after illness, injury, or a big life change - you're not alone, and help is available.
This page explains the different types of psychological support you can get in Lewisham.
Talking Therapies (Lewisham Talking Therapies)
If you're feeling anxious, stressed or down, talking to a trained therapist can help you feel better.
Lewisham Talking Therapies is a free NHS service for people aged 18 and over. They offer help with:
- low mood and depression
- anxiety or panic
- social anxiety or phobias
- stress or worry
- post-traumatic stress
- obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- body image or self-esteem
- living with long-term health conditions
You can refer yourself online - you don’t need to see your GP.

Support after illness or injury
Some people feel anxious, low or frustrated after a serious illness, stroke, or injury. Others may have memory problems or difficulty thinking clearly. This is very normal - and there is help.
You may be referred to specialist services like:
Neuropsychological rehabilitation
Support for people with brain injuries, neurological conditions, or stroke-related challenges.
Lewisham Stroke Group
A local group for people recovering from strokes, offering peer support and social activities.
Bereavement counselling
If someone close to you has died, you might feel sad, angry or lost. Bereavement counselling can help you talk through these feelings and begin to heal.
Lewisham Bereavement Counselling is free if you are aged over 60 or on a low income.
They also offer home visits if you can't leave your home.

Opening times: Tuesday: 12 noon-5pm, Wednesday and Thursday: 3-8pm.
Crisis Support (Mental Health Emergency)
If you need urgent help for your mental health but it’s not an emergency: Call 0800 731 2864 (choose option 1).
This line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can speak to trained staff and get help from mental health teams and peer support workers.
Or call 111 (press option 2) to speak to a trained mental health advisor.
If you or someone else is at risk of harm or suicide, please call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. There are mental health teams in A&E who can help.
