Will I have to pay for this service?

If you need care or support after leaving hospital, you may be wondering whether you’ll need to pay for it.

This page explains what services are free, when you may be charged, and how Lewisham Council assesses your ability to contribute to the cost of care.

What services are free?

Some services provided after hospital discharge are free of charge if you are eligible. These include:

Enablement services

Short-term support (up to 6 weeks) to help you regain independence at home. This is designed to support recovery after illness or injury and is free for eligible residents.

Intermediate care

Short-term rehabilitation, either at home or in a care setting, aimed at preventing long-term care. This may include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or temporary nursing care.

NHS continuing healthcare (CHC)

If your needs are primarily health-related, you may be assessed for full NHS funding. This is not means-tested and covers care at home or in a nursing home.

Funded nursing care (FNC)

If you’re in a nursing home and not eligible for CHC, the NHS may pay a weekly contribution towards your nursing care.

When might I have to pay?

You may need to contribute to the cost of care if:

  • you need ongoing home care after enablement ends
  • you move into residential or nursing care on a short-term or long-term basis
  • you receive extra services such as meal delivery, cleaning, or personal support

Whether you pay, and how much, depends on your financial circumstances.

What does the financial assessment involve?

Lewisham Council will carry out a means-tested financial assessment to determine whether you must pay for your care.

This looks at:

  • your income (such as pensions, benefits, and savings)
  • your capital (including savings and property) any disability-related expenses you may have

You will be asked to complete a financial assessment form and may need to provide evidence of your finances.

The outcome will determine whether:

  • you pay the full cost of care
  • you pay a reduced contribution
  • your care is funded by the Council

What if I own a home?

If you are moving into a care home permanently, the value of your home may be included in the financial assessment, unless:

  • your spouse or partner still lives there
  • a relative aged 60 or over, or a dependent child, lives in the property
  • you are receiving care on a short-term or temporary basis

The Council will explain your options, which may include a deferred payment agreement, allowing you to delay selling your home.

Can I get help with care at home?

Yes. If your needs are assessed and you qualify for support, the Council may:

  • arrange home care on your behalf and charge you based on your financial assessment
  • provide a direct payment so you can manage your own care budget
  • offer advice and support even if you’re a self-funder

Some people also qualify for disability benefits such as attendance allowance or personal independence payment, which are not means-tested and can help cover care costs.

What if i’m not sure what I can afford?

You can ask for a financial assessment at any time. The Council’s Financial Assessment team can help you understand:

  • what you are entitled to what you may need to contribute what funding options are available to you

They will also ensure you are receiving all relevant benefits and allowances.
