Practical support – help for everyday life

If you are disabled, you may need help with everyday tasks. We call this practical support.

You can get support at home or in your local area to live safely and independently.

What kind of help can I get?

You may get help with:

  • washing, dressing and going to the toilet
  • cleaning, cooking and shopping
  • managing money and paying bills
  • using transport and getting out
  • taking your medication
  • staying safe at home or outside
  • looking after your health and wellbeing

Occupational Therapy

An occupational therapist (OT) can visit your home to see what would help.

They can:

  • recommend equipment, like grab rails or shower chairs
  • suggest changes to make your home safer
  • help you learn new ways to do things
  • support you after illness or injury

Equipment and adaptations

You may be able to get:

  • small aids like bath boards and raised toilet sets
  • bigger items, like stairlifts or hoists
  • home changes, like ramps, wider doorways or walk-in showers

You will need an OT referral first and then an assessment.

Find out more about requesting adaptations to your property.

Technology and alarms

You can also ask about:

  • personal alarms you wear in case of a fall
  • sensors that alert carers or family
  • smart devices to help you with reminders, lights or routines

Ask your care worker or OT about assistive technology.

Personal budgets and direct payments

You may get a personal budget to pay for the help you need.

You can:

  • choose your own care provider
  • hire a personal assistant
  • decide what support works best for you

This is called a direct payment.

How to get practical support

Start by asking for a care needs assessment.

Request a care assessment.

Support for carers and families

We can help carers too.

You may be able to get:

  • advice and information
  • equipment or training
  • breaks (respite)
  • help to plan for the future
