Autism support

Getting the right help in Lewisham.

What is autism?

Autism is a condition that affects how people:

  • talk and listen
  • understand other people
  • see, hear, or feel things

Autistic people may:

  • find it hard to make friends
  • like routines and doing the same things
  • get upset by loud sounds or bright lights
  • have very strong interests or hobbies

Every autistic person is different. Some people need lots of help. Some people only need a little.

A new service to help you

We now have a new service in Lewisham called the All-Age Autism Wellbeing Service.

It started in April 2024. It is for:

  • children and young people
  • adults
  • families and carers
  • people waiting for an autism diagnosis
  • people who say they are autistic (even if not diagnosed)

What the service offers:

  • one-to-one help
  • groups and clubs for autistic people
  • support for families
  • workshops and advice
  • friendly staff who understand autism

More information:

You do not need a diagnosis to get help.

Getting a diagnosis

Adults

  • speak to your GP (doctor) - they can send you to a team who will check if you are autistic

Children and young people

  • a teacher, doctor, or school send worker can help start the process.

What help can I get after diagnosis?

You may be able to get:

  • extra help in school (like an EHCP)
  • support at home (help with washing, cooking or going out)
  • help to find a job or learn new skills
  • yearly health checks if you are aged 14+ and have learning difficulties
  • therapy and advice to feel better

You can also get help before diagnosis if you need it.
