Redeveloping contaminated land

If you are redeveloping brownfield or potentially contaminated land in the borough, the planning process requires you to submit a land quality assessment report.

Submitting a land quality assessment

When you submit your plans to the Planning Department, they will ask you to submit a land quality assessment. Developers often employ a consultant to produce this.

Lewisham's Planning Department will send the assessment to the Environmental Protection Team, who will advise if any remedial works are necessary before you start building on the site.

Site investigations

It is your responsibility to ensure that your consultants, contractors and sub-contractors are aware of the standards which must be met when undertaking intrusive investigations or cleaning up contaminated sites.

This will ensure that your development is not delayed as a result of unsatisfactory methodology or sampling design.

Town and Country Planning Act 1990

Potentially contaminated sites are dealt with through the specific planning controls outlined in the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
