Interpreting and translating

You may need help in talking to us if you don’t speak English well.

We can help you with translation if English is not your first language. We also provide a sign language service for deaf people.

Sign language service

Our sign-language communications support is based at the Customer Service Centre.

British Sign Language (BSL) qualified staff can give assistance and advice about a wide range of issues including:

  • benefits
  • council services
  • information on how to access adapted equipment and services
  • Blue Badges and Freedom Passes
  • education.

Foreign language translation service

We have qualified interpreters who provide telephone interpretation in many different languages.

You can use this free service when you visit the Customer Service Centre.

Face-to-face interpreters in meetings

We can arrange for foreign language interpreters or sign language interpreters to join you at face-to-face meetings if necessary.

If you would like an interpreter to be present at a meeting that you are attending, please inform the school or department you are meeting if possible two weeks in advance.
