Become an independent reader and writer 1 – for the visually impaired

Would you like to become an independent reader and writer despite your vision loss? This 11-week course will support community inclusion and health pathways. It is also a transition type course, a bridge between other departments at ALL and the Supported Learning department, for learners thinking about moving on with their studies. On this course you will explore the skills necessary to become more independent in your everyday life. You will become familiar with assistive technology like screen reader and audio type programmes and learn to access course resources on the Moodle learning platform. You will explore how to use the screen reader software to access webpages, emails, documents/forms, and practise filling them in.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
You need to have basic knowledge of the English language. This course is for the visually impaired.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
To learn about hardware identification and basic system control To use basic screen reader keyboard commands to perform web search and navigation of webpages To explore desktop and Windows navigation via keyboard shortcuts N/A

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will work with computers/laptops provided by Adult Learning Lewisham in class or you can use your own device.
