Literacy, numeracy and social engagement - mixed ability up to Entry 3

In this lively course, using lots of different resources, you will make lots of progress with reading, writing, spelling, speaking/listening and vocabulary development, as well as with mathematical operations. There will be an emphasis on playing games that help memory, improve social skills, and cooperation, while increasing confidence in social interactions.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
Basic spoken English is required and the ability to recognise numbers and letters, copy text, and pick out different patterns in text.There will be a pre-course assessment.

Learning Goals:
To develop skills in social boundaries and communication: peer support, decision making, taking turns, listening and responding, speaking clearly To develop reading skills to identify specific details with understanding To agree a personal maths goal N/A

What teaching methods will the tutor use?
Within this small supportive class, your tutor may use the following teaching methods that will be inclusive for all abilities and levels, so that all learners make good progress towards their goals: demonstrations, discussions, 1:1 support and practical group activities.

What assessment methods will the tutor use?
Assessment may include: informal question and answer, feedback, self-assessment, quizzes, games, portfolios and case studies.

Will extra work be required outside the class times?
It will be beneficial for you to practise what you have learnt in class in your everyday life and you may be asked by your tutor to complete something specific to enhance your new skills and improve your confidence.

What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
An A4 writing pad, pens, pencils, a ruler and an A4 file will be useful. Learners may buy their own USB memory stick to save their work and take with them at the end of term - all widely available at affordable prices.

What do I need to bring to the first class?
A4 file, a pen and paper

Options when finished
If good progress is achieved you can move on to adult literacy and numeracy level 2 or you can enrol on other Mindlift courses.

We expect a commitment to attend well. This is beneficial to making progress. If you have problems in class with your work or with other learners please speak to your tutor or contact the curriculum leader.
