Surrey Canal Triangle draft design framework set for consultation
This comes after a meeting of Mayor and Cabinet approved the draft design framework supplementary planning document on 30 October.
The consultation follows our decision to formally terminate the conditional land sale agreement with developer Renewal earlier this month. This came after 18 months of positive and constructive negotiations between Millwall Football Club and Renewal, facilitated by Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham.
Once the planning document has been consulted on and approved, it will help to realise ambitions to redevelop the site in the north of the borough and enable Millwall Football Club and Renewal to submit planning applications.
The supplementary planning document sets out the design principles for any future development of the Surrey Canal Triangle site, and will go to the public for consultation.
It outlines the development should include delivering a new Overground train station, more social homes and new green spaces. It also sets out that the development should make the most of the opportunities presented by Millwall Stadium and ensure the existing football and sports facilities are enhanced and accessible to the public.
Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, said, ‘I am delighted that, following eighteen months of negotiations, residents will soon be able to have their say on what the future of the Surrey Canal Triangle should look like. There is an exciting opportunity in the area and we are getting closer to realising it. My priority is that any development in the area must have community support, deliver new social homes and a new train station, while ensuring Millwall Football Club remains in Lewisham.’
The consultation process will run for six weeks. All responses will be taken into consideration and a final supplementary planning document will go to a future Mayor and Cabinet meeting.
