New town centre grants to encourage Lewisham's residents to Shop Local

Lewisham’s high streets to get a boost with the launch of the new Town Centre Small Grants fund.

A new grant to support local high street businesses over the winter months has been announced today by Lewisham Council. The Town Centre Small Grants could mean up to £2,499 for businesses or organisations that wish to deliver COVID-secure events or activities between December 2021 and March 2022 that will encourage more visitors to the borough’s town centres and high streets.

Local high streets have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19. In a recent survey of our high street businesses, many respondents perceived footfall levels to be lower than they were pre-pandemic. The Town Centre Small Grants have been launched to help address these issues and support local high street businesses as they recover from the economic effects of COVID-19.

The fund is open to voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations, registered charities, trader groups, arts or cultural organisations, business networks, individual businesses and education providers. The types of projects the grants will fund could include events, pop-ups, or support with marketing or building websites to promote businesses’ local areas.

Those wishing to deliver projects in December, will need to submit applications by midday on 30 November 2021. For projects being delivered between January-March 2022, the deadline for applications is midday on 22 December 2021.

This programme is being funded by the Welcome Back Fund. Visit the Council website for the full criteria and to apply.

Cllr Kim Powell, Cabinet Member for Business and Community Wealth Building said:

“Our independent businesses told us they rely mainly on in-person sales for their revenue. However footfall levels are still felt to be considerably lower than they were pre-pandemic. This grant is about getting people back onto our high streets and into our town centres to Shop Safe Shop Local and support our fantastic local businesses.

“We would encourage anyone with great ideas for bringing more visitors to our high streets, to get involved. All applications will be considered.”
