New inclusive economic development strategy sets out an exciting vision for the borough

Yesterday the Council adopted our new Inclusive Economy Lewisham strategy which outlines a clear vision for the unique, growing economy that Lewisham deserves and a plan of action for how we will get there.

As a vibrant part of London’s economy with distinct strengths and ambitious partners, our borough has a unique role to play in our in global capital city. Lewisham benefits from a highly qualified population with nearly 100 global languages spoken, a rich micro and independent business community and connections to central London. Lewisham is a place ripe for growth and investment and we have a bold vision for how we enable that growth over the next five years– but we need to make sure the benefits of growth are shared.

Our vision

Our vision is to grow an ambitious, unique, resilient and authentic economy and we plan to achieve this by

  • supporting businesses and creative industries, making Lewisham a destination for enterprise, growing the business base and attracting growth in target sectors.
  • understanding our role in decarbonising the economy through promoting sustainable solutions including retrofitting programmes, green practices, and a circular economy
  • equipping young people with the skills they need to succeed and
  • enhancing access to economic opportunities while addressing inequalities in growth

Inclusivity

We know that economic opportunities are not accessed or experienced equally by all our residents. This is why our vision outlines a future where residents can achieve their potential regardless of their background. This is supported by a robust action plan that focusses our work towards making sure every resident achieves their potential.

An inclusive economy is one with jobs that provide a good standard of living, accessible routes into good jobs, resilient businesses that thrive, resilient finances and wellbeing for all residents and respect for our environment and its limits.

To deliver on Lewisham’s economic potential for all, we must be confident about what is different and special about our borough, building on our strengths while also recognising what we need to work on.

Collaboration

The strategy puts investing in local partnerships and local people at the heart of our work. The Council alone cannot deliver on our economic aspirations. This strategy provides a vision and direction of travel that all of Lewisham can aspire to. Many of Lewisham’s institutions, major employers and affordable workspace providers are interested in or committed to helping the council deliver on this vision. It is an aspiration that belong to all of our strategic partners and everyone who works with our residents and businesses.

Councillor Kim Powell, Cabinet Members for Business, Jobs and Skills said:

“Thanks to this transformative strategy, the Council is clear on how we can push Lewisham’s economy forward, while importantly, not leaving anyone behind.

“We want to achieve our vision based on inclusive economy principles: by working with others to create the conditions for skills, resources, and income to grow, stay, and circulate throughout Lewisham.”
