New housing for Lewisham families in Forest Hill – a redevelopment proposal

A planning application was approved last night to develop six new council homes at 118 Canonbie Road in Forest Hill.

The 100 per cent affordable housing scheme will be delivered by Lewisham Council and its housing company Lewisham Homes. The three-storey building will include six two- and three- bed, self-contained homes. The development will also be car-free and include 12 cycle spaces and a large shared garden.

The site is currently occupied by a three-storey building which is in a state of disrepair and deemed unfit for human habitation. Purchased by the council in 2015, this building will be demolished with the aim to rebuild on the site.

Canonbie Road redevelopment visualisationThere are currently around 2,300 families in temporary accommodation throughout Lewisham, of which over 735 stay in nightly paid accommodation. These homes will provide much needed, high-quality temporary homes, supporting residents to stay within their local community.

To help inform the design a consultation event was held with the residents of Tewkesbury Estate in March 2019. The development will have a similar appearance to the building that it is replacing to ensure it is keeping with the local setting.

Councillor Paul Bell, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

“As part of our ‘Building for Lewisham’ programme, 118 Canonbie Road represents our dedication to meeting the long-term housing needs of local residents across the borough. We are proud that this housing scheme will deliver high-quality, genuinely affordable homes while supporting residents to stay within their local community.”
