Lewisham residents encouraged to hold events to celebrate Platinum Jubilee

Lewisham Council is encouraging residents to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee this June by hosting events which bring the community together.

The Queen and Prince Philip meeting crowds in Lewisham as part of Golden Jubilee celebrationsLast month Her Majesty The Queen became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. To mark this unprecedented milestone, events and initiatives will take place throughout the year, culminating in an extended four day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June. Residents are urged to start planning their celebrations now.

The Council is offering micro grants of up to £300 to support residents and local community or voluntary groups to develop events or activities to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. These might include anything from creating a community artwork to a hosting a sing-along. Grant applications are open now and the deadline to apply is 5pm, Sunday 3 April 2022.

One of the most popular and traditional jubilee celebrations is a street party. Any resident wishing to host a street party to celebrate the Queen’s 70 year reign will need to apply for a temporary road closure, which is free of charge. All applications must be received by the deadline of Friday 22 April to enable requests to be processed in time.

In addition to encouraging residents to organise their own celebrations within their communities, the Council is also developing a programme of events and activities which will be announced in due course.

Cllr Tauseef Anwar, Speaker of Lewisham Council, said:
“The Platinum Jubilee bank holiday will be a wonderful opportunity for people across Lewisham to come together to celebrate an historic milestone and reconnect with neighbours after a difficult couple of years.

“We want to support our residents to celebrate in style and are happy to be offering funding of up to £300 for local activities and events to help people get into the spirit of the occasion.

“We know there are lots of Jubilee street parties being planned. These are another great way to bring communities together to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year reign and to create memories that last a lifetime. We urge anybody planning to host a street party to get their applications in quickly.”

Residents can find further details on applying for Platinum Jubilee micro grants and road closures on the Council’s website.
