Lewisham pays respect on Remembrance Sunday
Hundreds of residents attended the two Remembrance Sunday Civic services that were held in the borough by the Council, honouring members of the armed forces who lost their lives serving their nation in the World Wars and subsequent conflicts. One was held at Lewisham War Memorial on Lewisham High Street. It was led by Rev. Peter Organ, Padre 1921 Air Cadets Lewisham, with contributions from other faith leaders.
The service was preceded by a military parade, where uniformed groups marked along Lewisham High street to Lewisham Memorial. Following the service, they marched back to their base for inspection by Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor Brenda Dacres, and Cllr Jacq Paschoud, Speaker of Lewisham.
The other Civic service was held at Deptford war memorial at the junction of Lewisham Way and Upper Brockley Road. It was led by Reverend Chris Hanning of St John’s Deptford.
Wreaths were laid at both services by local dignitaries, such as Mayor Brenda Dacres, Deputy Mayor of Lewisham Cllr Krupski, Janet Daby MP, Vicky Foxcroft MP, Ellie Reeves MP, the Speaker of Lewisham Cllr Jacq Paschoud, Sir Steve Bullock, Deputy Lieutenant of Lewisham and Kate Heaps Deputy Lieutenant of Lewisham.
Local dignitaries attended both services, along with residents, veterans and their families and representatives of uniformed and civilian organisations to mark Remembrance Sunday and the efforts of past and present service personnel.
Lewisham is an extremely diverse borough, and we can coexist peacefully, thanks to the selfless sacrifices of service personnel.
Lest we forget.
