Lewisham Council launches survey on strategy to reuse, repair and recycle more

Lewisham Council has launched a consultation to help shape plans to reuse, repair and recycle more, as part of its pledge to deliver a Greener Future for the borough.

How we manage our waste plays an important part in our mission to transition to net zero carbon by 2030.

We have developed a new 10 year waste management strategy that emphasises sustainability, ambition, leadership and innovation; working together to bring bigger benefits for the local environment; reducing emissions from waste to help improve local air quality; and supporting local supply chains, employment and social cohesionItseeks to bring about changes that prompt reduction of waste, and encourage reuse, repair and recycling.

Through the consultation, the Council aims to gauge support among residents for the strategy’s vision and objectives; identify key actions needed to support residents and businesses to reduce, reuse, repair and recycle more; and gather suggestions that could lead to innovative improvements.

Cllr Patrick Codd, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said: “We are committed to delivering a greener future for the borough and we recognise that how we manage waste is an important part of that. We need to make improvements to make this process more sustainable. I am sure we can be more ambitious and innovative, and supporting local supply chains will really help.

“However, we cannot do it alone. We need to show leadership and find ways of working with local residents, businesses and partners to reduce waste and increase reuse, repair and recycling across the borough.

“I would encourage as many residents and businesses as possible to respond to our survey, to help us understand what actions we should prioritise in order to achieve the greatest impact.”

The consultation runs until 15 October 2021, and people can respond via the Council’s consultation website.

Although we would prefer to receive online responses, the survey can be obtained and completed in different formats (e.g. a paper version) by emailing Luke Ellis at recycle@lewisham.gov.uk
