Holocaust Memorial Day 2020
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 is Stand Together. It explores how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising certain groups, and how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together and speaking out against oppression.
This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation and the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
Our annual commemoration takes place at the Broadway Theatre, Catford on Sunday 26 January from 3pm. Tickets cost £1 with 50p going to charity and tea and light refreshments will be available at the end of the event.
The programme includes:
- a film produced by Small Nose Productions and Holocaust Education
- a medley of Yiddish songs
- the lighting of the Holocaust Memorial Day candle
- drama, poetry and music performances by Lewisham primary and secondary school pupils
- a keynote address from Mr Edwin Shuker, Vice President of The Board of Deputies
- speeches from faith and community leaders including: Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham; Reverend David Rome, Catford and Bromley Synagogue; Femi Komolafe, Young Mayor of Lewisham.
Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, said: “With reports of hate crime rising across the country, it’s more important than ever that we unite with our friends and neighbours against intolerance. All Lewisham residents are welcome to join us at this special event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
“Lewisham has a long tradition of supporting Holocaust Memorial Day and Holocaust education. Hundreds of Lewisham children have taken part in performances this year to learn about the Holocaust and will share what they have learned at the event on Sunday.”
Tickets for the commemoration event can be booked on the Broadway Theatre Catford's website.
