Adult learners celebrate exam success at special awards ceremony

Adult learners taking maths and English GCSE courses and level 2 English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) qualifications with our adult learning service this year were presented with their certificates at an award ceremony on Tuesday 28 November. Learners celebrated their success with friends and family in recognition of their achievements.

This year’s GCSE results in English and Mathematics were higher than average for comparable institutions. Of the 40 adult learners who took Mathematics GCSE this year, 53% scored grade 4 or above, nationally the figure was 28%. Of the 29 adult learners who took English GCSE, 48% scored grade 4 or above, nationally the figure was 33%. 85% of ESOL learners achieved level 2 qualifications during the 2022-23 academic year.

For most people returning to education is a daunting prospect. Many arrive to a course unsure of their chances of success, perhaps because they struggled at school, or because it has been many years since they last took on formal learning.

Adult learners return to education for many different reasons. To improve their skills for work or further education, gain confidence and improve their everyday life skills. Among those receiving their certificates were: -

Dina Logina who arrived from Ukraine in 2022. She began learning English on ALL’s refugee English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) programme and quickly progressed to achieve level 2 writing earlier this year. She has returned to further her skills on a level 2 reading course.

Michael Taitt gained a level 1 functional skills maths qualification last year and was delighted to pass GCSE maths this year. Michael joined the maths programme to keep his mind active, improve his skills and have the satisfaction of gaining qualifications as a retiree. Michael demonstrated great commitment to his learning and provided positive support to his class peers throughout the course. He achieved a grade 5, the highest score of the foundation tier learners.

Dalila Bendrimia gained both maths and English GCSE qualifications this year. She achieved a grade 8 in her maths GCSE which is an exceptional result. Her success provides her with the qualifications she needs to fulfil her dream of going to university.

Cllr Walsh, Cabinet member for Culture, Communications and Leisure said: “I would like to congratulate our adult learners, they should all be proud of their hard work.

Our adult learning service continues to open new and exciting opportunities for adults returning to education. Whether it be to progress at work, access further education, to feel confident managing personal finances or help children with their homework. Learning does not stop at school; it is never too late in life to learn new skills”
