Self-funding your care

If you are responsible for paying the full cost of your own care (self-funding), it’s important to understand your options, rights, and financial planning considerations.

Who is considered a self-funder?

You will be responsible for funding your own care if:

  • you have savings and assets above 23,250 (2025/26 threshold)
  • you do not meet the eligibility criteria for council-funded care
  • you choose to arrange and pay for your care privately

If your financial circumstances change, you may become eligible for council-funded support in the future.

Types of self-funded care

1) Care at home (home care)

You can arrange home care services to help with:

  • personal care (for example, washing, dressing, medication support)
  • household tasks (for example, cleaning, meal preparation)
  • live-in or overnight care

2) Residential and nursing home care

If you require 24-hour care, you may need to move into a residential or nursing home.

  • residential care for people who need support with daily activities
  • nursing care for people with complex health needs, supported by a qualified nurse

3) Day care and respite services

  • day centres offer activities and social interaction
  • respite care temporary care for carers who need a break
