Events - The No Car Car Boot Market

Good People Car Boot is a community-centred market organiser designed to bring residents together through reuse, recycling and affordable shopping. They will host several pre-loved market days in Catford Broadway Market on the following days:

A bit of history

Catford’s street market began in the 1880s, originally in Rushey Green. It wasn’t until 1929 that the market moved into Catford Broadway.

In the 1930s there were about 50 stalls selling a mixture of food, clothes, crockery and carpets but the market fizzled out during the war, as Catford suffered serious bomb damage. It wasn’t revived until 1976, when licensing for 35 pitches was granted.

But nearly 40 years on, Catford market is still going strong. 

The market on Deptford High Street sells a wide variety of goods including fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, multi-cultural food, haberdashery, clothing, shoes and fashion items, fabric, curtains and household items.

Visitors can also pick up bargains or enjoy lunch at a number of shops and cafes on Deptford High Street.

A bit of history

Trading in Deptford started in 1872. It was originally a market for foreign cattle and sheep which were sold mostly to Smithfield meat market. The cattle market closed in 1913, and the market traders were moved into Douglas Way in 1921 to ease traffic congestion.

Situated in front of Lewisham Shopping Centre, with excellent rail, bus and DLR links.

A bit of history

Lewisham market began in 1906 and is one of a handful of six-day markets in London.

This picture taken in 1911 of Lewisham market was taken from the southern end, looking north towards Avenue Road, now replaced by the main entrance to the Lewisham Centre.

In 1944, Lewisham Market was bombed by a V1 rocket which landed 100 yards from the Clock Tower and killed 56 people, injured 99 and demolished part of the High Street shops.

To qualify as a farmers’ market, producers are typically local (within 50 miles) and sell their own produce. Bakers are required to use at least one local ingredient. The person on the stall is directly involved in production, so you can ask how things are made or grown.
