Wavelengths Leisure Pool re-opens on 9 January after major £800,000 refurbishment

The Leisure Pool now provides a new, light and open space for families, schools and all swimming lessons which will start from the morning of 10 January onwards.

The original changing village has been removed and replaced with larger, brand new cubicles. The beach, sloped-entry style pool will accommodate a wide range of sessions for all community users as well as the “Aquasplash” inflatable sessions.

The flume catch has been turned into a dedicated shallower, parent and baby pool. With a higher water temperature, it makes this the ideal environment to introduce little ones to swimming.

Inclusivity and accessibility for all community users has been an important consideration with all the renovation work. The new Leisure Pool will be running women-only swimming sessions in the New Year and with a long sloped entry make this an ideal pool to help those with disabilities gain access to the water.

The work to the Leisure Pool was funded by a combination of the existing leisure budget and Section 106 contributions from developers. Community access to swimming and other sports and leisure facilities is a key priority for Lewisham Council towards creating a healthy and well future for local residents. The Council has made this major financial investment to make sure that the Leisure Pool is improved and fully fit for the 21st century within a COVID-19 environment.Wavelengths Leisure Pool

Cllr André Bourne, Cabinet Member responsible for leisure centres said:

“Our sports and leisure facilities play a vital role in helping our community to stay healthy and well – and as a dad of two young children I know how important they can be for families as an affordable and fun place to spend time together too.

“Local people have told us that they really value Wavelengths leisure pool – so do we, and I’m pleased we’ve found a way to invest in it and keep it open and fully refurbished for the community. Against a bleak background of intense financial pressure and central Government cuts to leisure services, we have prioritised access to swimming for our residents. We want people in Lewisham to enjoy and improve their health and well-being - a vision being developed through our 10 year Physical Activity Strategy.

“This Leisure Pool was previously running at a significant annual deficit. By removing the ageing flumes, we have made a much-needed financial saving which means that we can afford to keep the Leisure Pool open. I think the right decision was made to invest in this space and I can’t wait to take my own children next month!

“We want Wavelengths to continue to be a popular local family attraction for years to come, please do come down in the New Year and enjoy the many improvements to the Leisure Pool!”

Wavelengths Leisure centre has lots on offer including a 50 station gym with three fitness studios and a huge range of fitness classes from Group Cycle to Zumba. The first-floor soft play offers a great space for younger children to have fun and burn some energy.
