Top marks for students in Lewisham

Lewisham students have achieved great results in their GCSEs.

Students from schools in Lewisham are celebrating after achieving top of the class GCSE results. This is the second year students have sat exams in the new style GCSEs in all subjects, and there are many stories of excellent achievements across the borough.

Forest Hill School saw a further increase this year in the number of top GCSE grades achieved, with 21% of the results awarded being grades 7-9.

Headteacher Michael Sullivan said, ‘We’ve seen some exceptional performances from Forest Hill students this year which make us so proud. This is due to the hard work of our boys and their dedicated teachers, and in no small part to the support of their families. Congratulations to one and all!’

Sedgehill School consolidated last year’s improvements, with the percentage of students achieving a pass (4 or above) in both English and Maths rising again.

They also saw a number of particularly strong individual successes. Students celebrating individual successes included Isaac Walker, who achieved three of the top grade 9s – in maths, science and English literature – as well as a number of 8s and 7s.

Isaac said, ‘I’m so pleased. I can’t believe I got the 9s! This is so good. I want to thank all my teachers for their help and support.’

Student Shantaya Douglas Smith said, I am so happy – really pleased all the hard work I put in has paid off. I am thrilled and can’t wait to enrol in the Sixth Form at Sedgehill.’

Clare Cassidy, Headteacher of Sedgehill School, said ‘We are very pleased for all our students celebrating today, who can be proud that their hard work and commitment to their studies has paid off. Likewise, I would like to thank staff for their ongoing efforts to give students the support and encouragement they need to achieve well.

‘As a school, we have worked hard to establish a culture of high aspirations and standards, so it is gratifying that this is beginning to show in the results our students are achieving. We look forward to continuing to build on these results in the years to come.’

Elsewhere across the borough, Prendergast School followed on from their best ever post-16 results last week with record-breaking GCSE results. They had over 81% of grades above 4 (C) in English and maths, and a third of all their GCSE results were between grades 9 and 7 (A*–A).

Prendergast Ladywell School also celebrated their best ever results for the second year running, which is a fitting end to a school year that saw them achieve their first ‘good’ rating from Ofsted.

St Matthew Academy also continued their upward trajectory with their best ever results and high percentages of pupils scoring grades 9–5 in maths, English and the sciences.

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, celebrated with students at Forest Hill School and Addey & Stanhope in New Cross today and said, ‘It’s wonderful to share in the experience as Lewisham students receive their results. They’ve worked so hard with excellent support from their teachers, schools staff and parents, and their results are a testament to everyone’s hard work and dedication. I’d like to congratulate all Lewisham’s GCSE students on their achievements and wish them all the very best as they move on to the next stage of their lives.’
