Pride and celebration as Lewisham students receive GCSE results
Lewisham’s average 'Attainment 8 score' – the measure used in England’s secondary schools to assess pupils’ average performance across eight GCSE-level qualifications at the end of Key Stage 4 - rose to 48.7 this year, up 0.7 points from last year.
More than two thirds (68%) of pupils in Lewisham achieved a 9 to 4 in English and Maths this year, up from 65% in 2025, while half of pupils achieved a 9 to 5 in English and Maths this year, up from 46% in 2025.
The borough’s average English Baccalaureate Average Point Score (EBacc APS) also increased again this year, rising to 4.5.
For many young people, the next step will be A-levels, BTECs or other qualifications at one of Lewisham’s sixth forms or colleges. Others will begin apprenticeships, training programmes or explore different routes into employment and further study.
Liam Shrivastava, Mayor of Lewisham, visited students at Bonus Pastor Catholic College and Lewisham College this morning to congratulate them on their achievements and hear about their plans for the future.
Mayor Shrivastava said:
"Results day brings a real mix of emotions, excitement, relief, pride and sometimes a few nerves. It was wonderful to visit students and staff at some of our schools this morning, celebrate their achievements and hear what they are looking forward to next.
"Today is about recognising much more than a set of grades. It is about the determination and resilience our young people have shown and the support they have received from teachers, school staff and families along the way. I also want to wish all our adult learners receiving their GCSE results today a huge congratulations.
"To everyone receiving their results today, well done. Whether you got the grades you hoped for or are now considering a different route, there are plenty of opportunities ahead. Take pride in what you have achieved and remember that there is support available to help you take your next step."
Cllr Rotimi Skyers, Cabinet Member for Children, SEND, Youth Empowerment and Culture, said:
"It is encouraging to see overall performance across Lewisham continue to strengthen, with more young people achieving the qualifications they need to progress.
"Our priority is to make sure young people have the opportunity to succeed, whatever their starting point or destination. That means working with schools, colleges, training providers and employers to ensure there are strong pathways into further education, apprenticeships, training and employment.
“We will work to create opportunities in Lewisham for any career path they choose, as well as provide pathways they can follow. Even if they are not sure of the end point, they will still have the chance to move forward and explore.
"A huge congratulations to everyone receiving their results today and thank you to all those who have supported them along the way."
Mr. Mahon, Principal of Bonus Pastor Catholic College, said:
"I am incredibly proud of our students for their fantastic GCSE results this year. These outcomes reflect their hard work and commitment, and they open the door to exciting new opportunities for their next steps.
“I also want to thank our dedicated staff and the wider school community. Their ongoing support has been vital in helping our students reach their potential. Today’s success belongs to everyone and it was great to have the Mayor here to celebrate with us."
Young people who are unsure about their next steps can speak to their school or college or contact Baseline Lewisham for free advice and support on education, training and employment opportunities.
