World Car Free Day 2026: Telegraph Hill comes alive
The event is going to be on the end of the road with The Hill Station Café and St Catherine’s Church, Hatcham.
Lewisham is once again bringing communities together with a vibrant, family-friendly event designed to promote greener travel, cleaner air and stronger community connections.
Why World Car Free Day?
World Car Free Day is a global initiative that encourages people to explore cleaner, greener ways to travel. By reducing vehicle use, we can help improve air quality, cut carbon emissions and create safer, more welcoming public spaces for everyone.
Whether you're walking, cycling, scooting or simply enjoying the atmosphere, this is your chance to experience Telegraph Hill in a different way while connecting with your local community.
Come along with your friends, family and neighbours and help us celebrate a cleaner, greener and more connected Lewisham.
In line with the day's aim to encourage cleaner and greener forms of transport, Lewisham Council and London Cycling Festival (LCF) are joining forces to get residents active by encouraging them to get on their bikes! LCF is a celebration of cycling throughout London. We’re pleased to announce that it will be coming to Lewisham, and we want you to be a part of it.

What's happening?
Kitto Road will be transformed into a lively community space where residents can enjoy a range of free activities and discover ways to live, travel and play more sustainably.
Expect a fun-filled day featuring:
- cycling sessions run as part of London Cycling Festival
- London Play, who will run interactive play activities for children and families
- face painting for all ages
- stalls from Lewisham Council services
- sustainable transport information
- engagement activities
- and more
All activities are free and designed to bring neighbours together while showcasing Lewisham's commitment to creating healthier, safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods.

Fancy running your own play street?
Why not close your road for the day on World Car Free Day or any other day to bring your neighbours together? We encourage residents to host their own street parties to mark the day and have a fun time outside. It is a great opportunity to promote active travel by leaving your car at home and walking, cycling or using public transport to connect with your local community.
You don’t need permission or special insurance to host a street party, but you do need permission from the Council to close a road temporarily for any event.
