National Secondary Offer Day 2020: Increase in preferences for Lewisham schools

The 2020 applications round has seen Lewisham secondary schools receive the highest number of total preferences from Lewisham residents in the last 10 years.

94 per cent of children due to start secondary school in Lewisham this September have been offered a place at one of their preferred schools – a 1 per cent increase from last year, according to figures released yesterday by the Pan London Admissions Board, the body with overall responsibility for co-ordinating school admissions in the capital.

62 per cent of Lewisham children were offered a place at their first preference school compared to 57 per cent in 2019, an increase of 5 per cent.

There was a significant increase of 10 per cent in Lewisham residents putting down Lewisham secondary schools as their 1-6 preferences since last year.

Seven of the secondary schools in Lewisham saw an increase in first preferences this year (in alphabetical order below):

• Deptford Green
• Forest Hill
• Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College
• Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy
• Prendergast Ladywell
• Sedgehill
• St Matthew Academy

Cllr Chris Barnham, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said:

"This is an exciting time for children looking forward to moving to secondary school in the autumn. I'm really pleased to see more Lewisham children and parents choosing to apply to our local schools, and glad that more of them have been offered their preferences. I'm confident that our schools can offer them a really good secondary education."
