Lewisham reflects on Remembrance Sunday

On Sunday 9 November 2025, Lewisham came together to honour the courageous individuals who have given their lives in service to their country.
Remembrance Sunday 2025

Residents, veterans, armed force groups, civic leaders, and community groups gathered at memorials across the borough to pay their respects and reflect on the enduring legacy of those lost in war.

The Lewisham service was led by Father David Adamson-Hill of St Mary the Virgin, with contributions from faith leaders, Council Members, and Deputy Lieutenant Sir Steve Bullock. The service began and concluded with a parade featuring members of the local armed force groups.

A second civic service took place at the Deptford War Memorial. This ceremony was led by Reverend Chris Hanning of St John’s Church, with participation from local faith leaders, Council Members, and Deputy Lieutenant Kate Heaps. A two-minute silence was also observed at 11am.

This year’s Remembrance Sunday service featured a special tribute to First World War servicemen from Deptford who died shortly after returning home from battle. Buried in unmarked graves at Ladywell and Brockley Cemetery between 1919 and 1920, their resting places reflected the hardship their families faced. Thanks to research by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Lewisham Council’s Bereavement Service, the graves have now been identified, with plans to install memorials in their honour.

In addition to the main services, the Chapel at Hither Green Cemetery and Crematorium was open to the public, offering a quiet space for reflection and remembrance.

Wreaths were laid by several dignitaries, including the Mayor, Brenda Dacres, Speaker, Cllr Jacq Paschoud, local MPs, representatives from the armed forces and community organisations and more. Their presence underscored the borough’s commitment to remembering the fallen and supporting those who continue to serve.
