Living Wage Week: why it matters

This week marks Living Wage Week, a time to celebrate employers who ensure their staff earn a wage that truly reflects the cost of living.

The Living Wage is calculated based on what people need to live, not just survive. Currently it’s £14.80. It helps families meet everyday costs and gives workers the security they deserve.

Across Lewisham, many organisations are leading the way by committing to pay the Living Wage.

The Albany, Deptford

The Albany is a vibrant arts centre in South London, a hub for creativity and community. They believe fair pay is essential for a healthy workforce:

“We recognise that the cost of living continues to rise across London and the UK, and we believe it is essential that our team feels confident their wages reflect this reality. By aligning our organisation with the London Living Wage, we aim to support the financial wellbeing and security of everyone who contributes to our work.”

Alongside fair pay, The Albany champions flexibility, positive working conditions, and access to training — creating an environment where creativity can thrive.

Therapy 4 Healing (T4H)

Since 2010, Therapy 4 Healing has provided high-quality therapy services to support people living with long-term conditions. For founders Devon and Karen Burke, paying the Living Wage is part of their mission:

“We’re proud to be a Living Wage Employer. Paying the Living Wage aligns with our mission to improve people’s well-being starting with our own team. It strengthens our culture, builds trust, and helps us sustain the quality of care our community deserves.”

Fair pay helps T4H deliver the compassionate, professional care that Lewisham residents rely on.

Young Lewisham Project

The Young Lewisham Project offers practical learning opportunities for young people who struggle in mainstream education. Their commitment to the Living Wage reflects their values:

“At the Young Lewisham Project, we’re proud to be a Living Wage employer. Valuing our team means valuing the young people we support — fair pay helps us build a motivated, caring, and committed workforce that makes a real difference every day.”

When employers pay the Living Wage, they invest in people, and it helps to create stronger businesses, healthier communities, and a fairer society. Lewisham Council is proud to stand alongside organisations like these in championing fair pay.

If you’re a local business, consider joining the movement.
