Lewisham Council unveils a map of trailblazers for Black History Month Celebrations

This week, in celebration of Black History Month, Lewisham Council has launched the Black History Lewisham 365 (BHL:365) Trailblazer Map, marking our 2024 Black History Month festivities.

The BHL:365 Trailblazer Map showcases prominent Black individuals and key locations significant to Black culture across the borough, recognising contributions in politics, the arts, health, and beyond. Each featured person or place is linked to the ward where they are represented, illustrating that Black history is part of our everyday lives.

Among the icons featured on the map are figures like Oliver Samuels, the "King of Comedy," known for his performances at the Broadway Theatre in Catford, and Jimi Hendrix, the legendary musician who briefly lived in Hither Green. Each icon was chosen for their unique contributions and ties to Lewisham, from Barbara Gray, who established Lewisham's Apprenticeship Scheme, to Olaudah Equiano, an influential abolitionist whose memorials remind us of the ongoing fight for equality. These individuals represent the diverse legacy of Black culture and history in our community. The map will be displayed at libraries across the borough.

The map is a continuation of our commitment to Black history throughout the year, building on SEEN Lewisham, Windrush Day, and the Black Leadership Event, all of which amplified the voices of Lewisham's Black community.

Residents are also invited to take part in the BHL:365 Trailblazer Map Competition, exploring key locations for a chance to win a pair of tickets to a show at the Broadway Theatre in Catford. Learn more about the competition and the map trailblazers.

Mayor of Lewisham, Brenda Dacres said:

“The purpose of this map is to encourage you, your family, and friends to explore and learn about Black history in Lewisham. Black history is on our doorstep; each ward is connected to a trailblazing person, event, or place significant to Black history both locally and globally. This map highlights the valuable contributions of our Black community and serves as a reminder of the rich and diverse history that has shaped Lewisham.

Although launching during Black History Month, this map is part of the Black History Lewisham 365 initiative. BHL:365 represents Lewisham Council’s commitment to platforming Black voices and promoting understanding of Black lived experiences 365 days a year.

We are proud to champion Black creators and trailblazers as part of BHL:365. This map is part of a wider activities happening year-round. These efforts also drive crucial conversations about how we can better support our Black communities.”

Councillor Edison Huynh, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities, said:

“We are fortunate, in Lewisham, to be home to so many influential Black people and trailblazers. This map is demonstration of what make Lewisham such a great borough to live in, with a history that stretches back over 500 years. We are working constantly to ensure that Black people feel valued, heard, and celebrated in Lewisham because we know this has a direct impact locally but also stretches far beyond our vibrant borough. Lewisham has been home to musicians, activists, artists and writers for hundreds of years and our work through BHL:365 is intended to build on this foundation that will last years into the future.”
