Joint statement
We know some people might be anxious and concerned about the current climate of division and hate that we are seeing and feeling across communities around the country.
No one should feel that way, and in Lewisham we are clear that there is no place for hate, racism, or division, and anything of this nature is condemned in the strongest possible terms.
Lewisham stands united against such behaviour. As the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary, we are proud of our long-standing commitment to welcoming immigrants, refugees and sanctuary seekers, and challenging hostility towards minority communities.
Now more than ever, we must come together to reaffirm our shared values of inclusion, respect, and solidarity. We want to reassure everyone in our borough that we will not tolerate acts of hate, and we are working closely with our communities and partners to ensure that all residents feel safe and supported, regardless of faith, background, or belief.
Keeping our communities safe is our highest priority. Lewisham is a place we are proud to call home, a borough where people of all backgrounds, faiths, and beliefs live together in harmony.
