Get ready for Clean Air Day

We will be celebrating national Clean Air Day on Thursday 20 June 2019 with a day of activity around the borough.

We are determined to tackle this emergency and improve air quality for everyone. Good air quality is important to everyone’s health and we can all play a part in helping to reduce the levels of toxic air in the borough.

What's happening for Clean Air Day

  • Our parking team will be at Lewisham Station from 8am to talk to commuters and hand out leaflets about our new emissions-based parking consultation that would help to improve air quality in the borough. We are proposing a new system of parking permits which would base the cost of your parking permit on the emissions of your vehicle. Whether you drive, cycle, walk or use public transport – make sure you have your say by 26 July.
  • Council staff will take part in a lunchtime walk and talk around Ladywell Fields between 12.30–1.30pm. Nick Pond in our Ecological Regeneration Team will give a talk about the park and lead a walk around the park exploring the benefits of walking for health, well-being and transport.
  • Volunteers and staff from our Environmental Protection Team will be holding an anti-idling awareness event outside Haseltine Primary School in Sydenham from approximately 2.30–3.15pm. They will talk to parents about switching off their engines when stationary and hand out our new anti-idling cards. The cards feature the design of Haseltine pupil Mehri Kabilova who recently won our school anti-idling banner competition run by our Sustainable Transport Team. Mehri’s winning design will be on display outside the school.
  • Staff from our Environmental Protection Team and our air quality champion, Cllr Louise Krupski, will be at Lewisham Shopping Centre from 3.30–4.30pm encouraging shoppers to make a clean air pledge for Clean Air Day. They’ll also be talking to local people about reducing pollution from not leaving car engines idling, walking or cycling to work or school instead of driving, and using approved appliances and fuel.
