Tremendously busy but not out of the woods yet

Non-essential shops and businesses have opened but the need to comply with strict safety guidelines has meant it’s not quite business as usual. We caught up with Rahme Barbaros, owner of Barbaros Hair Salon in Honor Oak Park, to find out how her salon is adjusting to the new normal.

How has it felt for you and your staff to re-open after lockdown?

"My staff and I are delighted to be back, it’s great to return to serving the community. This is the longest time I have been away from work in more than 32 years of being a hairdresser.

Initially we were a bit anxious. We did not know how things were going to turn out but everything has worked out well. We kept in touch with our regular clients via WhatsApp and Facebook and they are happy to be back too. It feels good to have a chat with people about what’s happening in the world."

What changes are there for customers in the booking process and the service they receive?

"Our customers book via email and telephone. We have a notice on the door that no walk-ins are allowed and it is strictly by appointment. People have been compliant and our clients are happy about it because everyone has a sense of safety. There have been a lot of changes with services, we cannot offer tea and biscuits and that feels a bit embarrassing even though we know it’s about safety. There are no magazines either. The first thing the client will notice when they walk in are hand gels at the entrance to the salon."

Has there been a surge in demand – and what is the most requested service since the salon reopened?

"A lot of people have not done their hair in over three months so demand is high. We have also had to stagger our appointments so we are almost fully booked for the four weeks. People were booking their appointments in advance before the actual opening. It has been tremendously busy but following such a tough time we know we are not out of the wood yet. There has been a range of requests but the most popular have been haircuts, highlights and recolouring roots. We have been fortunate, even though it has been a tough time. Since reopening we have also been able to secure some new clients. I really hope everything that’s happened encourages people to support local independent businesses in their communities a lot more. I hope to see more new faces."

Have there been big changes for your staff?

"Absolutely. Staff are now wearing visors to keep themselves and the customers safe. It takes a bit of getting use to but we are adjusting to it.  We also have to wash and wipe down seats and equipment between clients. It is a bit stressful and a lot more work, but we are keen on keeping everyone safe so we get on with it. We are also using disposable gowns and towels, this helps us to save time."

Did you receive any council support?

"We received a £10,000 grant from Lewisham Council, which helped us cover the mortgage for the shop, utility bills, stock and personal protective equipment. It has been a great help. Being out of work for three months means we have a long way to go before we’ve caught up with ourselves. Fingers crossed the worst days are over for all of us; like many we are concerned about a second lockdown."
