COVID-19 in Lewisham update 20 November

Dr Catherine Mbema, our Director of Public Health shares the latest update on coronavirus in our borough and the steps we can all take to help protect ourselves and everyone in our communities.

We have seen an increasing trend in infection rates for COVID-19 in London over the last week, though Lewisham continues to have infection rates below the average for the city. There is a huge amount of work going on to help maintain this through enhanced testing capacity, local intelligence to better identify those who should self-isolate, signpost to financial support they may be eligible for and help everyone to understand the rules.

This week, we’ve stepped up our public health response to COVID-19 to new levels.

A 42-strong Lewisham-based team is now supporting NHS Test and Trace, calling those who have tested positive for COVID-19 to explain why it’s so important to self-isolate, answer any questions and encourage everyone to support the effort to identify close contacts.

It’s a seven day a week operation and just one part of the work of our COVID Action Team, a group of staff moved from their usual roles in the Council. This team also delivers support for the clinically extremely vulnerable and helps to coordinate hundreds of Community Champions -volunteers who help everyone in the community understand the public health advice.

Our responsibilities are increasing and we’re pushing hard to be fairly funded for this essential work – read more about the financial impact of COVID-19. A local approach to testing and contact tracing makes a lot of sense and I’m pleased that we’re being given some flexibility to work with you to determine what is right for Lewisham.

Would you get a test?

Soon we will receive our first batch of the rapid tests that will allow many more people in Lewisham to get tested. Also known as lateral flow tests, they can be processed on site, meaning a test result can be returned very quickly on the same day. We’re learning more about the transmission of the virus all the time and we will be prioritising these rapid tests among groups and in settings where we know the virus spreads more easily.

The government has indicated that we could roll out up 10,000 tests every week, rising to 10% of our population. This is positive news, but before we embark on this huge logistical project, we’re keen to know how people without symptoms feel about taking a test. Take our survey to help us gather a better picture of what Lewisham thinks.

This morning, I visited Sedgehill School to hear their views on the rapid test pilot that has seen large numbers of their students, staff and teachers tested with the new lateral flow tests over recent weeks. It was a pleasure to talk to their headteacher and see the pilot in action. It is so important to work with and learn from our community directly about new COVID-19 initiatives, alongside reviewing published studies and evidence about what works best to keep our communities safe.

Past the half way point

We’re now 17 days into the national restrictions and we will soon learn about what restrictions might be necessary after 2nd December.

Although non-essential shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs are closed there’s a lot more activity on our high streets as people support local businesses with food deliveries, takeaways and click and collect. Don’t forget to take your face covering with you and make sure it covers your mouth and nose at all times.

Make the most of the sunnier autumn days and enjoy Lewisham’s parks and green spaces. Within the rules, we can meet with one person from another household but only in outdoor public spaces keeping the safe 2m distance, Getting outside for a little exercise is good for our physical health and mental wellbeing. If you find yourself stuck in the house more than you would like – open a window to bring in some fresh air, which also helps to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
