Mortuary service

The service is provided to Lewisham residents by the public mortuary in Greenwich.

It is an independent service, that handles deaths that have been referred to the Coroner, or deaths where no death certificate can be issued, as a post mortem examination is required to find the cause of death.

The mortuary provides:

  • facilities for the receipt and storage of bodies under the jurisdiction of the Coroner.

  • assistance to forensic pathologists with autopsies.

  • facilities for the viewing of bodies.

  • information and advice

What happens next

The deceased are kept at the mortuary until the coroner is satisfied that the body can be released for burial or cremation.
