17 new small electrical banks installed across Lewisham

Residents urged to recycle their electricals with the launch of a new campaign unveiling 17 recycling banks across the borough.

We have installed 17 new small electrical recycling banks across the borough. Alongside the introduction of the new banks, a marketing campaign has been launched to raise awareness of existing and new recycling locations in Lewisham. The campaign will use a mix of social media, eye-catching posters, and on-street adverts on local billboards and in libraries as well as public spaces in popular areas.

This is one of over 40 UK projects funded by Material Focus, the not-for-profit leading the Recycle Your Electricals campaign, who have provided £44,000 for the new recycling banks and marketing campaign. The Lewisham campaign will be joining other projects around the country in making it easier for 10 million UK residents to recycle their electricals.

Our aim is to help residents to dispose of their unwanted electrical items responsibly and easily.

Research has also shown that most of us have unwanted electricals we want to get rid of. On average, there are at least 30 electricals hidden away in drawers in UK homes, a total of 880 million items across the UK - with a simple repair, many could be donated or sold to people who could put them to good use.

Councillor Louise Krupski, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Action, said
:

“Our campaign, coupled with the introduction of recycling banks, moves us towards achieving Net Zero by 2030. On average, every household is holding onto 30 small old electrical items, such as cables, hairdryers, headphones, and electrical toothbrushes – all of which can be recycled at our new banks.

This initiative is a collective effort, and we understand that Lewisham residents are concerned about their environmental impact. It's reassuring to know that we are making it more convenient for local people to dispose of their items more responsibly.”

Scott Butler, Executive Director of Material Focus said:

"We are pleased to support the project in Lewisham that addresses the pressing issue of e-waste.”

"By investing in improved collection and drop-off services and exploring new recycling methods, we are taking a significant step towards creating a more sustainable future by making it easier for 10 million more people to recycle their electricals."
