New consultation launched for Sustainable Streets programme

Residents and businesses asked to share views on parking and pavement safety.

  • new consultation phase covers 60% of the borough
  • permits range from £85 - £158 annually and all money is reinvested back into the local area

The Council has launched phase 3 of its Sustainable Streets programme to gather views on parking issues from local residents and businesses in some or all of the following wards: Bellingham, Catford South, Crofton Park, Deptford, Downham, Forest Hill, Grove Park, Hither Green, Ladywell, New Cross Gate, Perry Vale and Sydenham.

Local people have been asked to share their views on how parking and pavement safety should be managed in their area, to help shape any potential changes to improve local streets.

The Sustainable Streets programme is designed to address parking concerns while making it easier and safer to get around Lewisham. So far, in areas that have already been consulted, resident feedback has played a crucial part of the programme, with, proposals directly shaped by the views and experiences of local people.

The consultation will take place in two stages:

  • firstly, residents can identify parking issues in their area and suggest ideas for improvements
  • if this feedback highlights local parking pressures, we will then develop proposals for Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) and other measures such as cycle storage and parking, electric vehicle charging points, or more street trees, and will consult residents on the proposed plans before any final decisions are made

To improve safety and visibility at junctions, double yellow lines and junction protection markings will be introduced. However, if no wider parking concerns are raised, these are likely to be the only changes made.

Councillor Krupski, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Climate Action said: “It’s vital that we work closely with residents and listen to their experiences - whether they’re finding it hard to park near their home, are concerned about pavement safety, or want greener, more accessible streets.

This programme is all about listening to local people. By working together, we can shape changes that really meet the needs of each area. We’re committed to cutting down on car journeys in Lewisham and encouraging more walking, cycling and public transport. That means better air quality, safer roads and healthier, more welcoming streets for everyone.”

Residents and businesses in the consultation areas are encouraged to have their say through our online survey, until Monday 16 June 2025

If a parking permit scheme is introduced, it will prioritise local people and businesses, to help reduce unnecessary car use. Any money raised from parking permits is ring-fenced to fund transport and highways improvements in Lewisham - including subsidised Freedom Passes for older and disabled people. This supports the borough’s response to the Climate Emergency and contributes to a better quality of life for all.

Residential parking permits for most vehicles in the borough will range from £85 to £158 a year for compliant petrol and diesel vehicles. To support residents and businesses in newly proposed CPZs, a 15% discount will be offered for the first year after implementation. This means most drivers would pay between £7.08 and £13.17 per month, which can be paid using our new monthly subscription service.

Eligible residents can also apply for a visitor or disabled parking permit. Visitor permits allow guests to park in resident bays within CPZs. Disabled resident permits are free, valid for 12 months, and allow parking in any resident, dual, or triple use bay across the borough, you do not need to live in a CPZ to apply for this permit. Housing estate residents also benefit from lower parking costs, with a 75% discount in the first year and 50% in following years.
