Lewisham stars shine bright on GCSE results day

Students from schools in Lewisham are celebrating after receiving their GCSE results.

Following 18 months of extremely challenging circumstances, there were plenty of proud smiles and stories of excellent achievements across the borough.

Conisborough College reported a rise in attainment for the third year in a row, and a rise in progress for the second year in a row. Top performing students include Thomas Phuong who achieved 8 grade 9s each, and Nesrine Zigadi who gained 6 grade 9s and 2 grade 8s.

Thomas said:

“I’m speechless! It’s what I was hoping for though. I’m looking forward to getting started at sixth form with Maths, Computer Science and Physics at A-level”

Headteacher Jane Hadlow, said: ‘

These results demonstrate the hard work of our young people over the last two years. Year 11 refused to let the unprecedented circumstances of the pandemic stand in their ways and remained determined to achieve to the best of their abilities. These results are also an excellent demonstration of the sustained improvements we have made at Conisborough over the last three years. As well as congratulating the students, I would also like to thank our hardworking, dedicated staff who really pulled out all the stops to help students achieve these wonderful results.’

Elsewhere Addey and Stanhope celebrated an outstanding set of results, maintaining a strong upward trend in all subjects with over 77% of students making more than expected progress.
Headteacher Jan Shapiro said: “Our students have achieved outstanding results under the most testing of circumstances. In the face of so much disruption, worry and hardship, they have proven their resilience, determination and ambition: gaining the grades that secure them their futures. I could not be prouder of our students nor more grateful to our teachers and support staff. It is a testament to the strength of our Addey’s community.”

Bonus Pastor saw a number of particularly strong individual successes. Students celebrating included Francis Iwu with four grade 9s and six grade 8s, and Ebony McPherson with five grade 9s, two grade 8s, two grade 7s and one grade 6

Councillor Chris Barnham, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and School Performance, joined Janet Daby, MP for Lewisham East, at Conisborough College and Bonus Pastor Catholic College to celebrate with students as they received their results, while Deputy Mayor Cllr Brenda Dacres visited Addey and Stanhope School in Deptford.

Cllr Barnham said:

“Congratulations to the Lewisham students who received their GCSE results today. This has been an exceptionally difficult time but I am pleased that so many students have received the results they deserve, and it’s great to hear that so many of them are continuing their Post-16 learning in Lewisham’s colleges and sixth forms. I would like to thank staff in our secondary schools who have worked so hard to support their students through the process.”
