Consultation starts on detailed Bakerloo line proposals

Monday marked a hat-trick of good news for our campaign to get the Bakerloo line extended to Lewisham, Catford and Lower Sydenham.

Next phase of consultation

Transport for London (TfL) is inviting residents and businesses to give their views on the most detailed proposals yet for the extension.

This third round of consultation follows previous public consultations in 2017 which explored potential station locations and plans for redevelopment in the area.

The proposals

  • A new tunnel would go under the Old Kent Road in Southwark to New Cross Gate and Lewisham.
  • A possible further extension to Hayes would support growth and regeneration in Catford and Lower Sydenham.

Government support needed

The opening of consultation on designs is a huge step forward. But the project needs support from the Government to fund the development.

Legal protections are also needed to stop development on the sites required for the new tube stations and worksites.

Working together with Southwark Council, we coordinated a joint letter sent on behalf of a cross-London coalition of council leaders, MPs and business groups, calling on the prime minister to get behind the project and ‘Back the Bakerloo’.

Petition reaches 20,000 supporters

In another big milestone for the project, the Back the Bakerloo campaign’s petition has reached 20,000 supporters. The petition supports TfL’s case to get the line funded and built by highlighting the level of local support for the scheme.

Add your voice

With TfL’s consultation now open, we are calling on everybody who supports the extension to take part. Take part in the consultation to have your say on the proposals, including whether you would like to see the Bakerloo line extend beyond Lewisham to Ladywell, Catford and Lower Sydenham.

You can also show your support by signing up to Back the Bakerloo.

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham, said, ‘The Bakerloo line extension would be transformational for Lewisham residents, providing better connectivity to the city and helping to deliver thousands of new social homes and jobs across the borough. We are delighted that TfL is considering the extension to Hayes in its consultation, which would unlock the vast potential of the south of the borough.’

Councillor Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said, ‘We believe the extension will make a huge difference to people living and working in Old Kent Road, as well as bringing wider benefits to London. The extension is an essential part of delivering more affordable homes, jobs and services to this part of London and opening up new opportunities for people across the city.’

Jasmine Whitbread, CEO of London First, said, 'If London is to maintain its position as the best place in the world to do business, it is critical that we tackle our challenges, particularly housing supply and our creaking transport infrastructure. The extension of the Bakerloo line is essential to south-east London’s future growth and quality of life, adding capacity and unlocking thousands of new homes. The Government should work with City Hall to get it delivered, so that Londoners can benefit sooner rather than later.’
