Report a dangerous structure

The Building Control team is responsible for making sure that buildings and structures in the borough do not present a danger to people in or near them.

A structure might be dangerous as a result of vehicle impact, lightning strike, poor building works or neglect.

How to report a dangerous structure

We operate a confidential service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you think that a building or structure is dangerous or unstable and may pose a threat to public safety please call us.

Contact us

  • Monday to Friday 9am–5pm: 020 8314 8233

  • At any other time: 020 8314 6000

We aim to arrive at the site within two hours of receiving a call, to assess the situation and decide on the best course of action.

We treat all complaints about dangerous structures seriously and in the strictest confidence. If you advise us of a building or structure that you think is unsafe we will not pass your details to the owner of the property.

Whenever possible, we will contact the owner of the building to carry out any urgent works.

Please note: if necessary, our surveyors have the power to take immediate action to make structures safe by calling on the Council’s dangerous structures contractor. In this case, the cost of the necessary emergency work will be charged back to, and is the responsibility of, the owner of the structure.
