Our war memorials project

Information about our project to record all the war memorials in the borough.

War memorials wiki

Our war memorials project aims to record all the war memorials in the Lewisham borough.

We have created a war memorial wiki with details of all the memorials we have so far.

For each memorial the wiki give the following, where possible:

  • a photograph
  • a transcript of the contents
  • a list of the names
  • details of the location
  • why the memorial was erected
  • who erected it and when.

Help add to the wiki

We are asking people to help us flesh out the wiki with details that bring the names listed on the memorials to life.

This information might be:

  • memories
  • biographical details
  • mementos
  • photos
  • documents

A resource for local people and schools

The wiki helps us better remember the people commemorated in the memorials. It also creates a resource for local people and schools to use in researching the borough and its history.

Any information or material you contribute will be added to the archives for future generations.

About the project

How the project started

This is a project started by the generous donation of Paul Dyer, a regional volunteer with the UK National Inventory of War Memorials. Paul donated a large amount of paper and electronic research on the war memorials in the Lewisham borough.

Where we are now

Ann O'Brien, on of the volunteers at the local history and archives centre, is working through the material we have gathered so far to produce a single document bringing it all together.

We plan to make a hard copy of this document available at the centre.
